To: Ir. H. Joko Widodo President, Republic of Indonesia Cc: Mr. Yulastiawarman Zakaria Chargé d'affaires for the Republic of Indonesia
Dear President Widodo:
I am an engineer writing from London, Canada. I was dismayed to learn that university lecturer Saiful Mahdi was sentenced to three months in prison for a “WhatsApp” message.
It is shocking and outrageous that Saiful Mahdi has been targeted solely for expressing his opinion on university hiring practices.
I call on you to grant Saiful Madhi amnesty immediately. It is your responsibility and privilege to ensure that the right to freedom of expression is respected, protected, and fulfilled in your country. You should revise the ITE to conform with international human rights laws.
I look forward to your reply on this urgent matter.
Sincerely, Shawn Nock
