30 May 2021

Dear Sir:

I am an engineer writing to you from London, Canada. I am saddened to learn that Victor Yeimo was arrested on 9 May 2021. Mr. Yeimo was arrested without a warrant in violation of Indonesian criminal procedure law.

The charge against him is treason, but the Papua police chief has suggested that Yeimo's participation in the 40th Session of the UN Human Rights Council was a reason for the arrest. This suggests that Mr. Yeimo's detention is arbitrary and politically motivated.

I call on you to immediately release Victor Yeimo and drop all charges, unless there is credible evidence that he has committed an internationally recognized crime. Pending his release, please ensure that he has regular, unrestricted access to his family and a lawyer of his choosing. Please also ensure that he is not subjected to cruel or degrading treatment.

Sincerely, Shawn Nock
