UAN Letter 66/21 Iran

To: Ebrahim Raisi
    Head of the Judiciary

hand-written letter, transcript follows

Dear Mr. Raisi:

I am an engineer writing to you from London, Canada. I am concerned that Vahid Afkari and Habib Afkari are being subjected to torture and other mistreatment in Adelabad prison. Since September 2020, they have been held in solitary confinement in a window-less cell. They were arbitrarily arrested during a peaceful protest and sentenced to lengthy prison terms after grossly unfair trials.

I call on you to release Vahid and Habib Afkari, quash their unjust convictions, and drop all charges related to their peaceful participation in protests.

Pending their release, please ensure that hey are held in conditions meeting international standards for the treatment of prisoners, including access to healthcare and their families. If they are to be retried for an internationally recognized crime, please ensure the retrial meets international standards of a fair trial and excludes forced confessions.

I look forward to your reply on this urgent matter.

Sincerely, Shawn Nock
