hand-written letter, transcript follows

Dear Minister:

I am an engineer writing to you from London, Canada. I am saddened to learn that two activists with the youth group Lutte pour le Changement (LUCHA) (Elisée Lwatumba Kasonia and Eric Mukindo Muvumbo) were arrested on 19 April.

I call on you to immediately and unconditionally release these activists. They are being detained solely in response for exercising their human rights peacefully. Pending their release, please ensure that they have regular and unrestricted access to their lawyers and families. Please further ensure that they are protected from torture or other ill-treatment.

I cannot overstate how bad it looks for a state to imprison its children for speaking their minds. The DRC can, should and must do better than indefinite detention and military trials for these young activists.

I look forward to your reply on this urgent matter.

Sincerely, Shawn Nock
